Rashid Center for Diabetes and Research was established in June 2010 as the national reference center for diabetes and obesity treatment and research in the region.
RCDR is a unique center in many ways. It provides an interesting example of a cross boarder public-private-academia partnership being owned by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs operating under the jurisdiction of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Ajman supervised by Global Health Partner, a Swedish healthcare organization with extensive experience in developing and promoting specialized health care services all over the world.
RCDR’s multidisciplinary team offers most of the treatment modalities relevant for diabetes and its related complications under one roof. The center is divided into six different departments, each headed by a team leader: the Diabetes Clinic, the Lifestyle and Bariatric Surgery Clinic with an educational kitchen and a gymnasium, the Foot Clinic, the Ophthalmology Clinic, the Laboratory – ranked as number 1 in the UAE and number 5 out of 725 laboratories internationally (Bio-Rad, 2011), and the Administration. In addition, the center has a project based team called REQA – Research, Education, Quality and Awareness. The center works with one common IT system in a completely paperless environment. This enables both a holistic and integrated care approach as well as the possibility to extract treatment data for research and improvement projects.
